DISCOVER THESE HERITAGE SITES ALONG THE ROUTE

FORT CORNWALLIS

Situated at the northeastern tip of George Town, Fort Cornwallis is the largest and oldest standing colonial fortress in Malaysia. Established in 1786 by Captain Francis Light of the British East India Company, it marks the exact location where the British first landed on Penang Island.

Originally built as a simple palm-trunk stockade to protect the settlement from pirates and regional rivals, labourers from India later rebuilt it using brick and stone into a classic, star-shaped bastion. Despite its imposing military architecture, the fort primarily served as an administrative hub and never fired a single shot in warfare.

Today, this UNESCO World Heritage site features historic prison cells, a centuries-old chapel, a skeletal steel lighthouse, and the legendary Seri Rambai cannon.

QUEEN VICTORIA MEMORIAL CLOCK TOWER

Standing proudly at the intersection of Light Street and Beach Street in George Town, the Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower (or Jubilee Clock Tower) is one of Penang’s most iconic colonial-era landmarks. Commissioned in 1897 by a wealthy local Chinese tycoon Cheah Chen Eok, the monument was built to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years on the British throne.

The architecture is rich in symbolic details. Designed in a striking Indo-Saracenic (Moorish) style, the tower is precisely 60 feet tall, with each foot commemorating one year of Queen Victoria's reign. Its elevated base is approached by six steps, symbolising the six decades she spent on the throne. These carefully incorporated design elements transform the monument from a mere architectural landmark into a powerful tribute crowned by a beautiful, slender-pillared cupola dome.

Due to Allied and Japanese bombings during World War II, the tower developed a noticeable, Pisa-like tilt, adding a touch of resilient charm to its historic character.

ST. GEORGE CHURCH

Located at the intersection of Farquhar Street and Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling, St. George’s Church is the oldest purpose-built Anglican church in Southeast Asia. Completed in 1818 by the British East India Company using labourers from India, this architectural masterpiece was designed by Captain Robert Smith to serve Penang’s growing colonial elite.

The church is an exceptional example of Neo-Classical architecture. It features striking white Doric columns, a stately steeple, and a polished marble floors, mirroring the design of St. George’s Cathedral in Madras. Outside on the lush lawns stands a beautiful canopy monument dedicated to Captain Francis Light, the founder of Penang.

For its profound historical and architectural significance, the church is listed as a National Heritage site of Malaysia.

MASJID KAPITAN KELING

Founded in 1801 by Cauder Mohudeen—the leader (Kapitan) of Penang’s Indian Muslim community—Masjid Kapitan Keling is the oldest and largest historic mosque in George Town. The land was originally granted by the British East India Company to serve the growing settlement of South Indian merchants and labourers.

Architecturally, the mosque is a stunning blend of Moorish, Gothic, and Renaissance influences. Initially a simple, single-story brick structure, it was elegantly transformed in the early 20th century by the renowned architectural firm Stark & McNeill. They introduced its signature Mughal-style golden domes, elegant crescent-topped minarets, and a striking whitewashed exterior.

Today, this iconic landmark on Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling stands as a vibrant symbol of Penang’s rich multicultural identity.

KUIL SRI MAHA MARIAMMAN

Tucked away in the vibrant heart of George Town’s Little India, Kuil Sri Maha Mariamman is the oldest Hindu temple on Penang Island. Established in 1833 as a humble shrine by early South Indian immigrants and traders, it was transformed into a permanent stone temple in 1933 to serve the local dockworkers and merchants.

The temple is a masterpiece of traditional Dravidian architecture. Its most striking feature is the towering, 23-foot-high gopuram (entrance tower), which is intricately carved with 38 hand-painted sculptures of Hindu deities, soldiers, and floral motifs. Dedicated to the mother goddess Mariamman, who is who is revered as a protector and healer, the temple serves as a peaceful spiritual oasis.

Today, it remains a vibrant cultural anchor, especially during the colourful celebrations of Navarathiri and Thaipusam.

LITTLE INDIA ENTRANCE GATE

Centred around Market Street, King Street and Queen Street in George Town, Little India is one of Penang’s most vibrant cultural districts. The area began taking shape in the late 18th century as Indian merchants, labourers and soldiers settled here, creating a close-knit community that continues to thrive today.

Today, walking through the district is a complete sensory feast. Known for its colourful shops, aromatic spices and lively atmosphere, Little India offers a glimpse into the rich traditions of Penang's Indian Community.

YAP KONGSI TEMPLE

Located at the junction of Armenian Street and Cannon Street, the Yap Kongsi Temple (Lum Yeong Tong) stands as a beautiful testament to the clan solidarity of Penang’s early Chinese immigrants. Built in 1924 by the Yap clan association, which was established in 1824, this ancestral temple served to support and unite Hokkien immigrants sharing the same surname.

Architecturally, the temple is an exquisite example of traditional Southern Chinese (Minnan) architecture. Its ornate roof features dramatic, sweeping ridges adorned with chien nien (porcelain shard) artwork depicting dragons, phoenixes, and mythical scenes. The facade is guarded by intricate stone lion carvings and exquisite pillars.

Today, Yap Kongsi Temple remains an active place of worship and an important part of George Town's UNESCO World Heritage Site.

GODDESS OF MERCY TEMPLE

Located on Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling (formerly Pitt Street), the Goddess of Mercy Temple (Kuan Im Teng or Kong Hock Keong) is the oldest Taoist temple in Penang. Originally established in 1728 by early Hokkien and Cantonese immigrants, the current structure was completed in 1800. It was initially dedicated to Mazu, the patron goddess of seafarers, before becoming primarily devoted to Kuan Yim, the Goddess of Mercy.

The building is a masterclass in traditional Southern Chinese architecture, featuring sweeping tiled roofs adorned with intricate porcelain-shard dragons and massive granite pillars wrapped in protective stone carvings.

As a vibrant spiritual hub, the temple’s air is permanently thick with fragrant sandalwood smoke. Outside, devotees release birds for good karma, while local puppet shows and Chinese operas still perform on its theater stage during festive feast days.
