Alliance Bank Continues To Drive Financial Literacy Among Young Malaysians

AEIOU Challenge 3, which attracted more than 10,520 submissions from 49 schools, draws to a close

Kuala Lumpur, 20 November 2017 – Alliance Bank today concluded the third instalment of the AEIOU Financial Comic Strip Challenge (“AEIOU Challenge 3” or “the Challenge”), with a renewed commitment to inculcate ‘Smart Financial Habits’ in young Malaysians, emphasising on financial literacy.

AEIOU Challenge 3 is Malaysia’s first and only Financial Literacy Comic Competition and ran for two months. This year’s competition saw the participation of schoolchildren across the country with approximately 10,520 submissions, the highest the Challenge has ever received.

Encik Shashim Shah bin Harun, Deputy Director of Education Selangor, Ministry of Education Malaysia was present during the awards ceremony and presented prizes to the top six winners, who emerged victorious out of 40 finalists.

  • Best Edu-Comic - Goh Zheng Je, 12, of SJK (C) Chi Man, Kuala Lumpur
  • Best Artwork Edu-Comic - Mia Chong, 12, of SJK (C) Lok Yuk, Sabah
  • Best Storyline Edu-Comic - Liyana bt Mohammed Rafidz, 11, of SK Taman Bukit Maluri, Wilayah Persekutuan
  • Audience Favourite Edu-Comic - Nurin Madihah bt Md Nazir, 10, of SK Bandar Teknologi Kajang, Wilayah Persekutuan
  • Best Character Design - Gavin Ng Ming Quan, 12, of SJK (C) Sin Hwa, Johor
  • Most Creative Edu-Comic - Tan Ai Chen, 11, of SJK (C) Khe Beng, Selangor

Goh Zheng Je, 12, from SJK (C) Chi Man takes home the top prize, winning Best Edu-Comic.


The winner of the Best Edu-Comic category walked away with RM5,000, while the remaining winners won RM1,000 in cash. All winners received a trophy and a certificate for their effort. SJK (C) Sin Hwa, Johor won the school category award with the highest number of submissions among its students and received RM5,000 in cash.

Mr Joel Kornreich, Group Chief Executive Officer of Alliance Bank said, “Every year, our goal is to make the Challenge bigger and better, reach more children and more importantly, make an impact in their lives.”

“AEIOU Challenge 3 embodies this passion – with a refreshed format and wider reach, we were able to garner more participation this year by visiting 42 schools nationwide, holding financial education classes for 8,500 students. Alliance Bank is committed to fostering financial literacy among young Malaysians and we look forward to many more years of AEIOU Challenge,” he added.

The refreshed elements of this year’s Challenge included:
  • a one month extension and expanded 8-page comic booklet that fully encapsulates the importance of saving, planning, and spending;
  • engaged learning via interactive video and audio learning booths and trainer-led workshops and games; and
  • six new award categories to recognise a wider range of skill sets and talents.

The AEIOU Challenge 3 was organised with the support of the Education Ministry, industry partner Spark Capital Development Berhad, and stationery partner Faber-Castell (M) Sdn. Bhd.

Encik Shashim Shah bin Harun, Deputy Director of Education Selangor, Ministry of Education Malaysia said, “The Ministry of Education looks forward to working with Alliance Bank on AEIOU Challenge every year, in order to promote not just financial literacy but to ensure students achieve language proficiency levels aligned to international standards. Last year, we launched a roadmap to continue enhancing English proficiency among teachers and students and initiatives such as the AEIOU Challenge can nurture students to have a better grasp of languages.”

The Ministry will continue to support future initiatives which will foster a smart and financially-savvy generation,” said Encik Shashim Shah bin Harun.

Open to Malaysian schoolchildren aged between nine and 12, the AEIOU Challenge is a comic-drawing competition for children with the aim of educating children on financial literacy through a fun and interactive way. Started in 2015, the Challenge has since visited more than 120 schools and received more than 24,000 comic submissions.
